R8 ROSEHILL05 April 2014
Tooheys New Golden Slipper G1 2 OPEN ($3,529,500), 1200m 1:12.17
Race Synopsis: Mossfun overcame a tardy start and came from third last in the run in with a late charge along the rails to deny the favourite Earthquake, who looked the certain winner when taking the lead inside the final 300m. James McDonald, aboard Mossfun, did not panic despite his mount being worst away from the barriers and then squeezed out. He quickly took her to the rail where she raced on the back of Ghibellines. She travelled well in the Heavy 8 ground and made up many lengths to be within striking distance to the leaders on cornering for home. McDonald elected to remain on the fence in the straight, a race winning move, with his mount picking up well to take the lead inside the final 100m, proving too strong on the line. Earthquake was very good in defeat. She was used up from her wide barrier (12) to race on the outside of the leader Eloping, three horses off the fence. Taken to the middle of the track, she travelled smoothly into the race and let down well to go clear inside the final 300m. She tired a little late on to only go under by three quarters of a length. The next three across the line, Bring Me The Maid (3rd), Believe Yourself (4th) and Memorial (5th), raced together at the rear of the field in third last, second last and last positions respectively. Bring Me The Maid, who was on the outside of the winner at the 500m, came between horses to get clear inside the final 300m. She finished resolutely to take a narrow third. Believe Yourself was second last closer to the inside into the home straight. Avdulla elected to come a little wider on the track at the 350m but then switched back a little closer to the rail. She kept finishing on late to grab fourth in the last couple of strides. Memorial ran a huge race. She was a clear last on the home turn. She switched out wide into the clear at the 300m and came with a big run to just miss the placings. Oakleigh Girl ran well in defeat. Third in the run on the inside of the leader Eloping. She challenged for the lead at the 300m but tired over the concluding stages to be beaten just over three lengths. The seventh horse home, another filly, Eloping led and worked hard. She was still there at the 200m but tired badly late. The first colt home, Ghibellines (8th), raced a little worse than midfield in the run and had his chance in the straight. He was well beaten. Unencumbered (10th) was trapped wide in the run and was widest on cornering for home, he was even to the finish but could not have won from his position in the run.
