You look at Highland Reel's career resume' to date and this colt wouldn't have to run another step for there to be a huge amount of interest in breeding to him once Coolmore decide to retire him to stud. He's logged more frequent flier miles than most humans, having now raced in 7 different countries(Ireland, Great Britain, UAE, United States, France, Hong Kong, & Australia). To date he's got Group/Grade 1 wins in the Secretariat Stakes, Hong Kong Vase(2015), King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Breeders Cup Turf, & Coronation Cup, plus a G2 win in the Vintage Stakes and a G3 win in the Gordon Stakes. He has 2nd place finishes at G1 level in the Prix du Jockey Club(French Derby), Juddmonte International Stakes, Prix De l'Arc de Triomphe, & Hong Kong Vase(2016). A 2nd at G2 level in the Hardwicke Stakes, and a 3rd at G1 level in the Cox Plate. It's also worth noting that the horses who've beaten Highland Reel in those races were all no slouches by any means themselves, I.E., New Bay, Postponed, Found, Satono Crown, Dartmouth, & Winx. Top to bottom, I think Highland Reel's career resume' to date stacks up with any of the other top older middle distance horses still currently racing in Europe at the moment, IMO.
I don't care where else Highland Reel races in 2017, but I really want to see him go to Epsom in June to run in the G1 Coronation Cup! He was pointed at the G1 Irish Derby instead of the G1 Investec Derby as a 3YO in 2015, but I still think Epsom is a track that would suit Highland Reel right down to the ground with this front running, bowling along on the front end style he seems to have adopted as his own in his past few races. Highland Reel has always been a beautifully balanced horse, and balance is certainly a key ingredient that's needed over the 2400m/12f with that downhill finish. Really hope that's a race that Aidan O'Brien points him at in 2017!
