I am really going to miss the Champion Stakes now it's gone to Ascot (and earlier, too). It was a unique race, (jockeyship to the fore) and looking at the roll call of winners there haven't been too many poor winners: I had a decent betting record for a while, because it wasn't a difficult race to get the profile right. I can understand why they've made the change, but it's a pity nonetheless. I'm proud to say I was there last October for its final bow (down at the 10f start!!).

Thanks for the comment its mainly why I post the old stuff great memories for me and others like yourself. I totally agree Newmarket back then was a proper vast open space it looks so racecourse like and small these days.

presenters were much less irritating for sure back then and i prefer those type of camera shots i hate the constant changing of angles used today. Racing used to to solely about the horses but it seems to have totally changed these days CH4 in particular have gone presenter and guest obsessed particularly on the revamped morning line.

Bluemanc, thank you (again)! And Tigerboy, don't be ashamed of that anorak - I think it fits me too. This was my last year at school and quite frankly, racing was all I cared about. I had a small bet (put on for my by a friend) on Cairn Rouge in the Coronation, and a bit more (I promise you, a tenner was serious stuff back then!) in the Champion. Most of all, though, I love seeing these old pics of Newmarket without any rails. There is something timeless about it.

Thanks for posting. Shows what a racing anorak I am that I remember ALL of these horses. Also fascinating to see how primitive the camera work was back then, although Im sure the presenters must have been less irritating.

Great post, Cairn Rouge was one of my favourite horses.I backed her every time she ran and this race was the end of a very successful three year old This race was sweet revenge for her as Master Willie had beaten her at York, but he went on to have a successful four year old career, great memories.
