QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes 2014 - The Grey Gatsby

Every time another classic runs I can't help but remember how exciting and special 2009 was. This race was one of five grade 1's won by Sea The Stars. Bad ride from Joseph O'Brien. He's also getting pretty tall, does he struggle to make the weight?

The Grey Gatsby's been a surprising overachiever this season. After finishing 10th in the English 2000 Guineas I certainly wouldn't have believed he would go on from there to win the G2 Dante Stakes, G1 Prix Du Jockey Club, & G1 Irish Champion Stakes. That being said, the best jockey won this race, not the best horse. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this was a horrible ride by Joseph O'Brien on Australia. He must of covered 50 to 75 meters more ground, at a minimum, than any other horse in the field by being out in the 5 to 7 path the whole way around the track at Leopardstown. Plus, O'Brien made his move and went for home too early on Australia too, IMO. Kudos to Ryan Moore for the ground saving trip he gave Gatsby and sitting and waiting patiently for the inevitable miscue you just knew was coming from Joseph O'Brien by the way he rode Australia in this race.
