UAE Derby winner Toast of New York, the morning-line favorite for the Grade 1, $1.25 million Belmont Derby Invitational on July 5, galloped on the Belmont Park inner turf course July 3. Includes comments from trainer Jamie Osborne.
Toast Of New York has only ran once on turf in 5 career starts to date, and
that was the very first start of his career in a maiden stakes at Leicester
in Great Britain. He finished 5th of 10 in that race, albeit pulling hard
and running rather green. But his form since on polytrack at Kempton &
Wolverhampton in the UK and on tapeta at Meydan has been first rate. His
record on those 2 surfaces is 4-3-1-0, including a win in the G2 UAE Derby
at Meydan. This colt has a ton of talent, as witnessed by how easily he
left the UAE Derby field for dead on world cup night. The big question
Toast of New York must now answer is if his recent synthetic form in the UK
& Dubai is good enough to translate over to American turf at a similar
level to his synthetic form. To me, the horse to watch out for in the
Belmont Derby is the French raider Gailo Chop. I've seen all of his races
in France and he's very talented. His career record to date, all on turf,
is 5-4-1-0 with 2 listed stakes wins and 2 G3 wins that both drew very
competitive fields in the G3 Prix La Force & G3 Prix Noailles. I think
Gailo Chop will take a world of beating in this race, IMO.
