This same year, Greville Starkey won the English and Irish Derbies and Oaks (Shirley Heights & Fair Salinia), Ascot Gold Cup (Shangamuzo) and Champion Stakes (Swiss Maid). Plus various other good races like the Mecca Dante (Shirley Heights) and Cheveley Park (Devon Ditty). Rode a career best of 107 winners and finished 4th in the jockeys table.

The saturated number of Group 1 races at 8 & 10 furlongs has a lot to do with the Derby's small fields. Had Nijinsky & Oh So Sharp had all these soft options available would they have completed their triple crowns? Will Camelot attempt it if he wins tomorrow? I don't think so. All these Mickey Mouse races have killed Flat racing's credibility as a competitive sport.

This should be the ride for which Greville is best remembered as Dancing Brave wasn't entirely his fault. DB never won on a left-handed track and lost the 1986 Derby because he became unbalanced round Tattenham Corner. Replacing Greville with Pat Eddery didn't prevent the same thing happening in the Breeders' Cup Turf.

How timely to upload this magnificent renewal - from the days of when the Derby was a true spectacle that stopped the nation - to show the contrast with this year's pathetic 9-runner affair. Sadly neither of the two main protagonists, Starkey and Shoemaker, are with us. Great ride from Starkey in what was his annus mirabilis. Have some vivid memories of this Derby day, aged 9. The World Cup had just started in Argentina; Kevin Keegan gave his tip as "Paul Mariner's Italian brother, Julio."
