You can tell they all love this horse. They'll probably put him out to stud, anyway. Class act.

And since the tendon is weaker it is more prone to re-injury. There is also a huge possibility that he could not run as well as he has after a come back, which as ekadirny82 pointed out, would cause a large drop in his stud price. It just makes more sense on so many levels to retire him while he's at the top of his game.

The injury is the beginning onset of tendonitis in the left front superficial tendon. It helps pull the horses cannon bone straight after the rear tendon pulls it back (to lift it up). Its a serious injury and in the best interest of the horse that they were cautious and caught it early. It takes roughly six months for it to heal properly before he could get back into training, which wouldn't give him enough time for the BC. Also, once tendonitis shows up the tendon will stay weaker than it was.

You are already big winners by doing what you have done for this horse. Of course it is a dissapointment but you have made a great decision here and animal lovers like me applaud you.

This was a shock to many people! Just one day before the big race. This is obviously an amazing horse and we wanted to see a triple crowne Winner since it haa been 34 years now! I hope that you change your mind and give this horse time to heal and then come back racing. This horse loves to race and knows how to Win! It is important that all of us do what we Love in life. I'll Have Another loves to RUN and will come back strong! Let this horse be the legend it wants to be!

I totally agree! It would also help solidify him as one of the all-time greats if he were to win big.

Absolutely. Wouldn't it be great to see him come back next season as a 4yr.old and maybe get a crack at winning the BC Classic? That would at least be some consolation for having to scratch out of the Belmont if he could back and win the Classic?

I know what you mean. It's also kind of annoying that they're not even going to give him a shot at coming back later. It'd be awesome for him to make a triumphant return as a 4 year-old.

Humane decision by a first class team; and a great looking horse.

well its a real shame these big guys feel u have to train the shit out of a horse everyday till even the day before they run lookes like hes a little tranqued too and why in Gods name would u want to parade him in the post parade before the race they really better tranq him good is it all for Show i can see the rise in the tendin so why not just do the best thing allll around AND LEAVE HIM IN HIS STALL looks like the racing Gods? weren't really pleased after all .

  • GBeret83 Says:

    9/06/2012 10:12:41 AM

Oh I absolutely agree. It's actually nice to see an owner and trainer putting the good of the horse ahead of a shot at racing immorality. But it's still so frustrating to have had all of this media hype for the past 3 weeks only to have I'll Have Another have to be scratched at the last hour.

He'd be healthy in about 3-6 months, so it's always possible that he could have been. There are a few problems with him racing again though: 1. he might not be as good, meaning less stud fees, 2. he could easily re-injure it- these kind of injuries have long plagued other horses, 3. it's probably just nicer for IHA to retire after all his hard work.

  • GBeret83 Says:

    9/06/2012 7:17:26 AM

I haven't watched this entire clip yet? But I haven't even heard yet what the injury was that got him retired? Could they have had him back in racing shape again in time for the BC Classic?

  • ekadirny82 Says:

As shocked and sorry I am...the trainer and the doctors could get him to running condition within 5 to 6 months...but they decide not to in case he won't be as successful as he has been which would mean a huge price drop on his stud fees in the future
